After all, this Indonesian island is not your typical shopping paradise that appeal much to shopping-mad Singapore.

But if it's more of sun, sea and rustic charm that attract ones, here could be the place for you.

No sign of Dutch (except windmill) in Holland V

Took a ride to a place I last visited more than 10 years or so.

If my memory don't failed me, Holland Village is actually named after a Caucasian with the other name of the Netherlands.

Just that the misperception that folks used to think this part of the island used to reside by the Dutch because of that name.

Probably, the only sign of Dutch-ness in this lively place is the windmill (pictured above).

The recent opening of the "Circle Line" (CCL) train service has helped to draw many heartlanders here, which till the recent past were largely patronized by those who drive and willing to take a few buses before arriving.

So for a period, this place was long misunderstood as an "atas" domain dotted with some fine dine and wine restaurants that an uproar was caused sometime ago with a local resident urge the "stop of influx of heartlanders" as it threaten the "unique ambience of the community".

Yet little do she know with the commencement of the CCL has actually bring the place closer to the rest of Singapore with lunch crowds being swayed here to fill their hunger.

Next time if you come to Saigon (HCM) check out their thriving coffee house scene.

Here I am not talking about those "kopitiam" you and I find it familiar at "our house downstairs", but those posh ambience cafes that dotted around this main city in Southern Vietnam.

I was told there are 100 of such coffee houses sprung around this city and the one I went not that long ago is actually hid inside a back alley of an obscure street.

Enjoy your meal or drink at this coffee shop with some smoothing songs by those singers (pictured above) to bring you out of this world for that moment of peace.

Geylang Serai Bazaar

Finally got a chance to head down to the Pasar Malam at Geylang Serai.

While there may be other similar festive markets sprung across the island, but it is here on the east side of the island where people would normal get the "feel" of the atmosphere leading to Hari Raya Puasa.

Don't forget to try the legendary "Ramly" Burger (pictured above) if you heading down to the pasar.

While a friend recommended the "Katirah" beverages (pictured above) after I tweeter I was heading there.

While getting essentials such as the floral display and clothing are top of the list, but be sure to head down there with an empty "tank" to enjoy those streetside cuisine.... Yummy ;)

Even though we really hope it was the case...

As someone who help out as a stall assistant at a hawker stall, sometimes I really wish most patrons would exercise that "bit of pro-activeness", which I think is never the case for most of us.

Got to admit the fact that that each time we having our meals at eatery outlets, be it hawker center or the posh restaurant, we would expect to be treated like a BIG "F"!

Some reasoned the fact that we are paying and we ought to be treated with all these blah blah blah.

Unfortunately, some of the ungrateful lots tend to abuse the bit of "privilege" to bossing people around who are serving them.

What a shame and if only all can think the way as if they are in "McDonalds" I think our life would be much easier ...

Disgusting sight

What could be more disgusting when you come across a sight where unfinished food left untouched for minutes only to realize the people who ordered and ate less than half of what they ordered and left.

Frankly speaking, these are the kind of scums that really put me off.

Being someone helping at a hawker stall, I always learnt and bear in mind to appreciate the long hours people spent to prepare the foods.

And yet, there are some scums are out there disregard effort spent and choose to waste the food like nobody business.

Shame on these scums and I hope these scums would perished from the world with no single pity from all.

I am not sure how many of you feel the same like I do?

But just couldn't help but feel a sense of helplessness after watching the Wimbledon Ladies' final at a pub outside, instead on the luxury of your couch at home?

Just to think more than a decade ago that live telecast of such major sporting events were readily available on terrestrial channels.

But now they are exclusively on the cable, much to the dismay of those who don't have cable subscription in their home.

That's the sad reality, folks...

Comparison led to "Status Quo"

Just a thought here that is it fair at times to draw comparison?

How often had we not having people do that in a way to comfort, console one and other by compare with each other's plight.

At the end of the day, has it solve any issue that led to such comparison in the first place?

While there may have some merit on doing so, but at times I would rather find it kind of imposing when one would just have to follow the other person's way of interpretation of ideals and belief.

So in the end, nothing is done, nothing is solved with everything remains status-quo.

Not that long ago I did a self-survey or what you called those "psychological analysis" on whether am I a "shopaholic" and what would be the impact if I am one of those or not.

And not surprisingly I am not one of those enjoy strolling around aimlessly at malls or shop outlets.

But what I rather find it amusing is the fact for folks like us, we are being labelled for the one particular group that helped to fuel economy depression.

Simply because we hardly or refused to spend momentarily to keep the economy "going" and suggested that if all follow our suit the world would long be in deep recession.

Hahaha, apparently when a time we were taught to spend wisely, save for the rainy days, be thrifty, etc. now we are being labelled as the one who causing the collapse for not spending enough.

Oh well...

The first meal I had in Kuching was to sample the renowned "Kolo Mee" (pictured above) - Dried Noodles served with ingredients such as prawns, fish ball, pork livers, etc.

I will never forget how I made my way to Fort Margherita, which is a test of courage and more of an endurance to see would bother to come to this fort built in the 19th century on the north bank of Sugei Sarawak.

I am not sure if this word is fast become my catchphrase, but it's always the first word that came out from me when that's an exasperation.

The reaction or feeling just came about whenever I reached a breaking point or merely came to a pause or something.

As I was sitting inside "Brauhaus" here in United Square and pondering this question suggested by the subject.

You see, I am not one of those got to use their rest days wisely as it's pre-occupied by other chores.

As I was typing this, I just slacked myself to an arm rest chair listening to the performance by the live band.

I chose to slice my sausage into bit pieces, not because I find it costly but I wonder why the rush when I have nothing to bother the following day...

So just let me have my moment of peace, as I down my sorrows after my beloved Saints just lost to the Pies hours ago... Blurp!!!

Question: if we want to see those in and those we don't want in the Parliament, why we didn't decide their fate with our ballots convincingly?

Isn't because of the electoral system left us with little options or just because some of us would rather remain "status quo" and "suffer in silence" despite the hardship we facing?

With dust settled after this morning, we seen so many petition pages sprung out in support for various causes... My question is why some of us didn't exercise the right we have OR should we say if those want to change remain a mere minority?

Who would have thought the just concluded GE's Returning Officer (RO), Yam Ah Mee is currently the hottest (unlikely) celebrity in town who shot to fame overnight for appearing on our TV screens to announce the results.

I first came to know this man when I was serving my National Service donkey years back while he was someone among the top of the army hierarchy before he left the service to serve as the head of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) before switching over the People Association (PA) somewhere last year.

We want a voice to speak for us? Or we want someone to look up to in times of need?

Each and everyone has been urging us to "think carefully and vote wisely", as what matters is not just the present, but of those of the future's

But what can we expect when we have our "voice" heard and yet can't get the things done when they don't have the means to do them?

But what can we expect when we get our things done, but remain "mute in silence" at expense of it?

As we came to realize "every single vote matters" and because a moment of "madness", "anger" or "fear" we cast a vote that would change our life., let's hope we don't cast a foolish vote...

So they are finally here and after more than 20 years, my constituency is finally going to have someone from the other end challenging the incumbents.

Although, I have been pondering if the opposition really know what the electorate want in the first place?

It seems to me most opposition are urging the voters to vote them into the house to act as "voice for them" in the Parliament.

But the bottom-line, even if these folks are being voted into the house to act as a "voice", served as an "auditor" to check on the authority, so long not equipped the power to enforce or change a bill it's meaningless ....

Just like a poor small kid wants to buy an expensive toy which is not affordable to his poor family, he cry over it and wouldn't still get his wish unless the pocket is going to be burnt.

But the question is what would have driven people to risk the risk take up loan by those illegal loan sharks?

Despite the well-publicized campaign to drive the message across the board, it seems that the "Ah Long" has always to easy way out for those desperate.

I guess must be the fact that the "no frills" services they offered until the stark reality that come to haunt those debtors.

Think twice those about those "no frills" benefits that dangle that might ruin your life...

This news on the Chinese tabloid suggested that because of the strive for perfection that eventually led to this bespectacled guy murdered his mother in Australia.

Sad indeed, but on the other hand if the demand imposed on this guy ain't that unbearable why would such a thing happened in the first place.

Think about it and know where is your limit, if not you wouldn't want to see someone you know end up in this manner..

At home, at school, at work and virtually everywhere, so just what had happened to this world?

I must make thing clear that I am not whining, but just a mere expression of opinions that it seems like we aren't longer the master of our destiny.

And our very fate and destiny are being dictated by external factors, which are not likely to be within our control.

This is very interesting collective of advices which I thought are pretty useful and handy when travel overseas.

It was compiled by Kevin Salwen and his wife, Joan.

Together with their daughter, Hannah, Salwen is one of the authors of “The Power of Half: One Family’s Decision to Stop Taking and Start Giving Back.”

"Repeatedly confounded by these questions, my wife, Joan, and I started to compile an informal rule book for what we call “econ-travel.” Rules are breakable, of course — and many of these have been — but by having them, I find myself less caught up in the decision-by-decision anguish of what to do.

1. Fix a daily or weekly budget. You may not be able to avoid feeling like a patsy or a skinflint, but a budget of how much to spend, tip or give will create a structure for your own sanity. The goal is to walk that tricky line between helping and having every encounter turn into a negotiation. You’ll never make everyone happy, but at least you’ll have a framework.

2. Overbuy gifts for yourself and others. This is our favorite method of economic development. It helps fuel employment (the most dignified form of money transfer) and it has the residual benefit of having something to bring back home. On a trip to India, we bought a gorgeous hand-woven rug in Jaipur, a piece that we were told took more than four months to make. As our guide, Ashok Verma, later told me in Varanasi, India: “Crafts are the best thing to buy; they have people’s dreams woven into them.”

3. Don’t bargain down price, bargain up quantity. Joan wanted to buy a set of colored stamps with bindi (Indian forehead dots) for her students (she teaches seventh grade). One hundred rupees, the vendor said. No, too expensive, she replied, following cultural norms of bargaining. The negotiation was on. Finally, Joan bought three sets for that same 100 rupees (about $2). The man got his price, she got more stamps. Ms. Honey urges travelers to stop bargaining before they are the only winner. “Let people earn a real wage,” she cautions.

4. Try to be more than a consumer. Local citizens “may be economically poor but they are often culturally rich,” says Harold Goodwin, professor of Responsible Tourism Management at Leeds Metropolitan University in England. So, engage in their culture by getting off the large bus and taking an interest in how they make their living. It’s O.K. to take photos of individuals who capture your interest — but only if you ask first and pay if requested, he adds. The rule is simple, Mr. Goodwin says: “Treat them as you would like to be treated.”

5. Let others earn a living by helping. In American airports and hotels I never get help with my luggage; wheeled bags roll, don’t they? But overseas, I’ve learned to relax and let someone else carry my suitcase. It’s a rational way for local residents to feed their families, and certain people have turned luggage-carrying into an art: when we were leaving the Varanasi train station, a man offered to carry our bags, then stacked both my and Joan’s roller suitcases on his head for our 200-yard walk.

6. Don’t give to panhandlers. Handouts send a multitude of wrong messages about dependency and the value of work. Plus, handouts encourage more begging, often by children (an awful alternative to school). Long-term change never starts with a quarter or even $10 stuck into someone else’s palm. Still, even Ms. Honey concedes she breaks down sometimes. “I tend to give to women and children because they are the most vulnerable.”

7. Instead, buy stuff on the street. The hawker’s life is a tough one, always a fight against weather, traffic and crime. So if you want to help, buy more than you usually might. Granted, I acted counter to this by not buying that T-shirt from the boy in Palmyra, but, as I think about it now, what would it have harmed if I had? Since then, I’ve purchased boiled eggs, bagged water, toys, even a novel. (I politely said no on the kitchen strainer.) Why not bolster that small-business spirit?

8. Sample local food. Tourists in the developing world often eat at a limited number of hotels or restaurants deemed safe by guidebooks. There’s logic to that, especially where food-borne illness is concerned. But you’d be missing out on part of the reason you travel in the first place.

“Buy food and beverages from local producers, taste the locally produced foods and enjoy this as part of your holiday experience,” Mr. Goodwin says. For instance, you haven’t really tasted a banana if you’ve never had one grown for immediate consumption (compared with ones modified for export and sold blemish-free in United States supermarkets). Peels help keep the fruit safe, as does boiling in the case of a cup of local tea. The winners are the farmers, who often are at the bottom of the economic pyramid."

Not to belittle or demeaning...

As the title suggested, this entry is not meant to be discriminating against those "pekerja orang asing".

But a mere reflection on how things can be frustrating and a start of a day can be ruined.

Was at the Roti Prata shop along Upper Thomson Road for my brunch and was being served by the waiter.

"Roti John Prawn." as I told him in his native language.

The waiter seemed to be taken aback with my order and asked:"Is it on the menu?"

I pointed the word PRAWN to him under the submenu of "Roti John" and he duly penned down my order.

While sipping my less-than-desirable "Teh Halia", I was stunned to see a plate of "Mutarbak" placed right in front of me.

"I told him already!" said the hapless waiter who pleaded his innocence by saying he ask told the kitchen what was my order.

Good thing, the boss was right on spot to pacify everything and served the "Roti John Prawn" I had ordered moments later.

When making my payment, the boss apologized and said it was a case of misunderstanding, while I told him the uncertainty of the waiter when I placed my order.

Oh while ... Nevermind...

Tweet ur way to trouble

We heard news reports on how misuse of "Twitter" can land someone into trouble (ask Ryan Babel).

I would thought our government agencies would always take extra precaution on using this micro-blogging tool, until I saw a tweet message what offer anyone $100 for revealing who was the naughty one for sending a naughty message that caused such an embarrassment for Health Promotion Board.

And out of curious I traced back and can't help but had a good laugh at the original tweet (which was indeed the PR nightmare!) that the person who managing the statutory board's twitter account had a frantic time trying to appease its followers (as pictured above).

However, with the damage is done and last heard someone will be using this blooper as case-study.

The resident cat

Nobody really knows when was this cat born?

It just appeared out of nowhere and has been loitering around our block ever since one took notice of its existence.

So much so, this black-white furred cat has become the "resident" cat of the block where we live in.

It is so accustomed of its surrounding that it would never ran away in fear whenever any human being walk near to it, unless under certain kind threat it perceived.

I think it would be weird one day for the residents, if suddenly it's disappear for no unknown reason

"Commandment of the Patrons" - Guidelines to follow when placing your order at Hawker Centre

As someone who helps out at a hawker stall during his non-working days, I thought it would be a good thing to come up with a set of guidelines for patrons while placing their orders with the stall they patronize.

Sounds a bit ridiculous, but from the perspective of someone who is over at the other end of these patrons one would come to appreciate it's that necessary to have such guidelines being enforced.

And therefore, I would name this set of guidelines as "Commandment of the Patrons"

Thou shall be clear and precise of what you're ordering.
Thou shall not add on a few more orders after being served (especially when at busy period).
Thou shall not to be offended when being asked to repeat your orders.
Thou shall place your order when thou are absolutely sure that thou are being attended to.
Thou shall not take advantage of those hawker just because thou are a regular patron.
Thou shall be ashamed of thou self when thou ask for a refill of any kind when thou are about to finish thou meal (especially those well-off).
Thou shall not fight with thou follow patrons over who shall pay for the meal when serve at thou table.
Thou shall be prepared (if possible) to come up with loose changes when paying up.
Thou shall not place on your order from afar (not all are superhuman to make out what thou order from a distance).
Thou shall be grateful that you are being served when thou are lucky not to serve.

Sometimes, I just wonder if our mind "deliberately" choose to ignore some information simply because they "aren't music to our ears"?

Picked up these copies of free dailies at the train stations while on my way to work.

The front most is published by what the netizens labelled as by those "pro-gahmen" publishers.

While the broadsheet behind is somehow being defined as the "alternative-opined" (which I would rather labelled that as).

For those who read both publications may shared the same sentiment that one's content tend to be on the moderate side, while the other would see itself as the "auditor" of the establishment or sort.

There's no doubt that in the present time when information are spread and share in matter of seconds through the means of cyberspace, it's pretty hard to deny some stark facts from filtered out (i.e.: Wikileaks).

However, what holds the key is when how each individual and eventually a sizable group's reception to a piece of information that present to them that how they decipher the content of it will determine how a popular opinion is formed in the end.

Vote wisely....

It's not that I understand Korean, but this clip here is one of the memorable scenes from this Korean drama "President" which I'm watching on KBS World.

"Jang Il Jun" is a presidential candidate facing a group of student in this scene where he chided these undergraduates why they, besides the politicians, should be blamed as well for the present woes facing the country.

If I remember correctly what the subtitles mentioned, it goes something like these.

"It's because you are not interested in the politics!" said Jang

"Instead voting on the polling day that decided the fate, future of the nation, you people choose to spend that day to go dating, having fun out there and leave it to the politicians.

"And when the country is eventually run by those inept politicians that us to a bleak situation, you would just pin the blame on them when you in the first place did not exercise your right as a voter wisely." as he continued with his rhetoric.

"So don't you think you should bear some responsibility as well?" he asked a bewildered audience as seen in the clip.

At the end of the day, not only Jang managed to convey his message across the group of student, it eventually hiked his approval rating as well.

So doesn't it makes sense that it's not about who you vote for, but did you vote wisely in the first place?

The sickening part of the day~“人比人，气死人”

Some bastards out there are just too keen to see themselves worst off than the others to make themselves look noble, why?
I am sorry for the choice of word to describe an individual, but it was a mere impression of that individual who was out to champion his case as someone who ought-fully felt he should be the "worst of the worst".

It begun with a rather simple chat at an eatery when this bus driver triggered this conversation.

"So what do you earn for a living?" said this bus driver as he was tidying his stuff on the table.

"You know you have the easier job than us!" as he started to stake the claim after made known to him as someone from the transport industry as well.

"As compared to ours, where we have to deal with traffic jams, erratic weather and driving conditions." he said.

At this point of time, I realized the pointless of further engagement of this argument, when this guy clearly HAVE NO IDEA what he's champion for.

Call it a waste of time and I save my breathe and walked out of the eatery.

There are talks apparently urging the authority to implement the "minimum wages", but it is rejected by the Government on the grounds that it might made the country less competitive and drive up the business costs.

And see this picture above?

Very unsightly of course, no doubt about it and this is common sight I see every weekend when helping out my mum's stall.

And probably this is the reason why we need to implement the "minimum wages".

Clueless? Sorry but here the riddle for all to think about it...

Don't in the name of making them look good and provide better dinning environment for the patrons by upgrade them, all in the expense of ending up jacking up the price for the public and the hawkers.

Yes, I agree with what KF Seetoh of "Makansutra" mentioned on the other day in his TNP column (pictured above).

Behind of those renovated facade and eye-catching fixtures that came along after those upgrading also meant a few other things - adding on to the business costs.

Simply asked around those who are earning a livelihood as a hawker, the chances of having them say times are difficult as a hawker nowadays.

As there's tendency of having the rental hike up after those upgrading works that come with better facilities and also because those food providers have to cope with the increase of other costs such as the ingredients', manpower, utilities, etc.

Therefore, it's not common to see many hawkers eventually give up the trade after they decided to call it a day.

And the worst of all is the lately suggestions of getting private food courts operators to take over the operating of this national institution.

I would certain hope this day would never come, though I would not be surprise it happen tomorrow.

If it does, it's a sad day indeed...

The papers just lauded the "cooling" effort implemented in last year by the authorities to curb the housing price, despite hitting another record high.

However, in its best bid to pacify the public anger, the papers stressed the hike came at "a slower pace".

But we can't deny the fact that with record housing prices going at this rate, would we one day become "reluctant" millionaires, if those measures fail to curb the unrealistic valuation of those houses, especially those in the public housing?

Pictured on the left could seen as a sign of affluence for this couple with their modern outlook.

Whereas facing them are two less-privileged folks hoping for some sympathy from anyone cross their path.

And lastly, take note of the middle-aged lady in the middle of these two groups who attired in a simple way.

Now, if we look at the proportional composition of these people in this picture, does it reflect the social reality we facing at this moment?

The richest group are topping their coffers every now and then, with the poorest growing bigger in size and the middle-class are feeling shrinking effect as time goes by, right?

I can't be that certain about that as the recent in-fighting in one of the main opposite camps had cast all kinds of doubts if most Singaporean are really "X" for the non-governing parties.

Election as such is something we can't be dictated by mood, we got to ask ourselves who are the worthy one to be "X".

But then, having said that It doesn't imply the other one deserve my "X", having recently shocked at the fact a HDB unit costs 0.5million and the pending utilities bill surge soon.

But having read 17.4% economy growth, it definitely boast the confidence of the incumbent and one question really had to ask those who are to be given a chance to vote - Are we gonna vote with our head or with our heart?

For one never fancy shopping, I found myself inside this concrete jungle just because of no reason for reason to be here.

Honestly, I'm kinda freak out to be at a shopping mall unless I have some errands to settle, otherwise, it would be a torturing experience nonetheless.

Especially, the fact you be dealing with those festive shoppers, blind consumers who walk around aimlessly.

But what could not be the worst than you are trying to figure your way out, when the mall management have not even come out with a user-friendly directory to guide the shoppers around?

It seems like a dread daily routine in and out for most of us, and honestly speaking the mood of the day could make or break while you begin you commuting to work, school or play.

Isn't it the case? Just like one joker cut into your queue, accidentally step onto your toes, blocked your way when about to alight or board the train or bus, beat to the seat you eyeing for long?

And once you got into those 'defeated' mood, how would you feel and find it hard to lift yourself out it?

You see when you ever heard a mint branch being forced to undergone a major repair work before it ever start operating?

So eventually the authority had to erect a wall along Orchard Road to avoid the repetition of the flood that caught the whole Singapore by surprise.

So this must the reason why we have this chairs and tables at the height, in case Ooops...

Just hate the idea of walking around Singapore.

Everyone seems to be on a rush to whatever it is.

To it to the bus, to the train, to the shortest taxi queue, you name and they will do it.

Along the way, you bound to be bumped or bumped onto someone, in return that either you being stared OR staring people (no wonder youth crime rate on the rise).

I think the worst of all are those hoggers along the way, who would pause for a moment to see where they are.

And have yourself being bumped on them when the sudden pause take place.

Wouldn't you mind plan your route before making your way to your destination to avoid those unnecessary BUMP!

Not that long ago I read that if any visitor wants to buy a souvenir as a remembrance from Singapore, he or she should get a fortune kitten (pictured above).

My instant reaction is - WHAT A JOKE! and the person who made that suggestion must be crazy!

I mean as we all know this kind of fortune kitten is originated from Japan and it's being popularized by the locals in the recent years as a lucky charm or sort.

Whether it helps to bring fortune to its owner is not proven, but to suggest this gift as something associated with Singapore - is silly.

Anyway, this solar-powered fortune kitten was bought in Macau, so does that meant is a symbol of Macau instead of egg tarts?

the "legendary" experience

The notorious volatility of taking budget flight is legendary among travellers.

Have we not hear those horror experiences related by those travellers about how much inconvenience were caused by those abruptly delays, rescheduling, cancellation, etc.

Furthermore, have we not hear of those strong-worded complaints directed to those carriers, yet they still managed to survive.

Despite those hiccups caused, these low-cost carriers still managed to stay afloat.Simply because the demand for lower alternative flights is far too great.

And I finally experienced that "legendary" experience when my flight back home was delayed for almost five hours.

Those horror accounts I read in the past had came to realization.

But and the end of the day I realized it's pointless to feedback (the word "complain" sounded undiplomatic), so long they can bring us back safe and sound (which I believe is their ONLY priority).

Cost-effective cafeteria

I came across this 'cost-effective' cafeteria while we were waiting to board our flight back home from Shantou airport.

Cost effective in a sense that it only operate when there's a flight scheduled to depart.

In another words, it just cater the needs for those departing travellers and the moment they onboard their flight, they will cease operating.

Unfortunately, the unforeseen flight delay had to hurry the unprepared staff back to reopen the cafeteria to pacify those starving folks.

Scenes of chaos took place inevitably, as orders were mixed up and passengers were stretching their necks to wait for their orders.

Actually, this is a good way to streamline and manage the operating costs, but the readiness of the staff and the patient of customers are put to the test.

(P.S: to avoid waiting for too long, reach a consensus and order the SAME stuff for the SAME table)

The BIG Fuss

The man depicted inside the picture (pictured right and partially hidden) was an angry man onboard our delayed flight back from Shantou.

Claimed to be a frequent traveller to countless places (as overheard in the departure hall that he boasted to all before boarding), he was upset for the fact that his hand-carried luggage "was shifted out of his 'slot' without his knowledge" and registered his unpleasantness to the cabin crew.

"How could you shifted my belongings without telling me!" he berated the crew in Mandarin when they answered to his call.

Apparently, in the process of pushing and stacking those luggages stored in the overhead compartment, some of the passengers or the cabin crew unknowingly shifted his luggage.

"What if I did not check when I disembark and lost my stuff in the process, who shall be responsible?

"At least, you should have informed me before the rearrangement, right?" he barked continuously as if the crew understood what he was saying.

Shortly, we were told to disembark from the plane due to some unforeseen technical problems.

"Because my passport and monies are inside this bag" said this "frequent traveller" when I passed him on my way out of the exit, while he was cautiously checking his belongings.

For someone who claimed to be a "globe-trotter", how could he kept his travel documents and monies away from him when common sense tells us these items shall always be with us all the time?

This beggar depicted in this pictured was found outside Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou.

He and his compatriots would positioned themselves outside the temple and targeting those worshippers who came out from the temple in hope to tap on their benevolent to shed a few shillings to their bowl.

The problem is there's an "unwritten rule" that thou shall not show them any kindness, if not they will not show any kindness to you.

I think all of us were always taught of this say, "DO ANYTHING YOU WANT, BUT DON'T GET CAUGHT!!"

How true it is of this saying, as I was at a lake this afternoon in Meizhou, where I saw this sign (picture above).

It says "Swimming is PROHIBITED, at your own risk".

Despite the warning and the freezing temperature, we saw a few of the bravadoes remained undeterred and swam in the lake!

Just like on the roads in China, despite the mandatory use of helmets you will still see motorcyclists defy the ruling and ride on their bikes without the head protecting gear.

Maybe it's true after all that so long you don't get caught, you are fine!

This bottle of water cost RMB1, but it's not your ordinary kind of bottled water.

Inside this bottle is well water from a 800-year-old well that was dug in 1276 during the South Song dynasty found on the island of Nan-ao (南奥岛).

Was told this water is also known as "water of miracle" for its medical wonders like its ability to cure sore eyes, sore throat.

It's not hard to locate the stall - "Yunus & Family", as it's tucked right at the corner of the hawker center.

Sometimes, folks got to realize safety is their own responsibility and other external elements are mere compliment to it.

That's the reason why I can't stand the way why question - when the installation of the platform screen doors be taken place, will always be asked when a fatality takes place at an above-ground station that had someone killed after he/she was found on the track.

While some may be pure accidental, what really pissed me off is some cowards choose to end their lives in such a horrifying manner.

I would always reserve my deepest sympathy, not to the families of these cowards, but to those train drivers who would be traumatized by the unpleasant event.

其实起初对他的印象不是很好，可能是当时对重摇滚乐不太能接受。

对黄大炜的出现难免会有些排挤、排斥的感觉。

但时间永远是能让些事务与物得到的蜕变最好过程，所以就在不久前重温了黄老师的经典作品 ﹣≪妳把我灌醉≫ 和 ≪愛讓人心碎≫，到觉得不愧是经得起时间的金曲，毕竟这两首歌也已经是进二十年的“老歌”。

人们难免会有那么点偏激的心态，通常会以某种标准来决定那样事务的好与坏。

好比说刚不久前，我来到驰名的旧机场路熟食中心，由于不知道要吃什么就望人多地方去。

于是，来到一档卖炒粿条的摊位，只因有人在排队(也获奖，上报无数)就不假思索地跟着排队。

排了大概十来分钟，叫了一盘炒粿条，结果发现也不过一般。

刚好，斜对面也有一档类似的炒粿条档，人潮就没那么多但也不之于“拍苍蝇”。

所以，就顿时觉得我们是否常用这种以外表来判断事务的心态呢？

说真的，或许这位"获奖无数”的摊贩如果之前不被赞许的话可能也许保持他原有的水平。

但是到如今，位面对顾客的需求，难免在手艺上或许逊色些也说不定。

I just don't know how I fall in love with this game.

To the folks in most part of Australia on the left side of the Barassi Line, it's called FOOTBALL.

To the other side of the "Line" and the rest of the world, the name "AUSSIE RULES".

Basically, it is a game with two teams of 18 players each side playing an oval-shaped football with aim to score more points over another to win the game on oval-shaped pitch.

The point scoring system works as such if a player scores the "GOALl" by placing the ball through in between the two taller poles, it worth six points.

And it's consider "BEHIND", the ball is place through in between the shorter and one of the taller poles.
And when a team wins, they would just SING in their dressing room!!

That's simple intro to FOOTY...

I always have this question come to my mind whenever I seen any of this "help-the-needy" kind of spring cleaning activities undertake by any community organization or corporate entity.

Don't get me wrong while it is something laudable and should be appreciated, but how long and much can we help when the things are "over"?

Very often, we seen trailers on television screening this type of "help-the-needy" program on primetime slots getting volunteers and celebrities to do all kinds of meaningful stuff.

But at the end of the day, what have these gimmicks benefit those in need who were featured on our TV screens?

Should there be someone responsible to follow up on those in need after the end of the program?

If everything head back to square one after those touching scenes on TV, I think it's POINTLESS and WASTE of TIME...

Singaporeans has been the largest group of visitors to Malaysia each year. Millions commute daily between these two neighbours either by air, land or sea. Even with the ever increasing number of flights between Singapore and Malaysia, express bus operators are not giving up just yet and looks set to compete with the budget airlines.

But with many bus express operators providing almost an hourly trip to towns across Peninsular Malaysia, which company is best that suits to your budget, time and convenience? Fret not.

First and foremost is, of course, to choose your destination. Singapore is connected to many towns in Malaysia. Frequencies ranges from hourly* departures to popular destinations such as Kuala Lumpur and Melaka (Malacca), to once or twice daily departures to towns such as Penang, Seremban, Alor Setar and Genting Highlands. Some destinations, such as Mersing and Kuantan are served three times weekly whereas some are served 3-5 trips daily.

*hourly trips are usually available during the morning and evening

The second step is to choose which bus that will bring you to your destination. This is by far, the hardest part of all, especially if you are the type who wish to travel on other buses that you have not travelled on.

Bear in mind that unless you are the ‘I-will-go-with-the-first-choice’ kind of person, choosing the ideal bus might take some time.

Unlike in the olden days where buses are cramped, expect at least Super VIP-class with ’2 plus 1' seating configurations on these modern buses. Buses with the conventional ’2 plus 2' seating configurations are still running though, but to smaller towns like Mentakab in Pahang.

Those who wish to indulge in simple luxury and comfort may choose the high-end coach services with facilities that can even match air services.

The majority of express bus operators from Singapore has at least one daily trip to Kuala Lumpur. Some of the bus companies that serves the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur segment are Aeroline, First Coach, Five Stars, Konsortium Bas Ekspres, NiCE, Sri Maju, Transtar, Transnasional and many others. Other smaller towns are usually served by less well-known operators which will usually call at Larkin Terminal in Johor Bahru before proceeding to the intended destination*.

I recommend prospective passengers to browse the respective websites of the bus operators first, if available. These websites can be found on the right hand column of this page. Some of these operators allows online booking as well but remember though, some do charge a small administration fee on top of your ticket price.

If all your questions are answered just by browsing the website, proceed to make your booking, either online or over the counter. But just to be safe, I highly recommend that you make that trip down to the ticketing office. Here’s why..

Not all seats are available for booking. Some seats are blocked for one reason or another. These are usually popular seats that passengers would almost always choose for any available trip.

Don’t be surprised if you find that the blocked seats, or usually shown as ‘Sold’ on some online ticketing system, are available for purchase.

You get to save more! Online reservations will incur more charges, such as the administration fee. Buying over the counter will mean you don’t have to pay for all that. One can also expect the Fuel Surcharge** to be waived.

But then again, if you choose to pay using your credit cards, you will still have to pay for the administration fee though.

Peace of mind. You get your questions answered on the spot by the ticketing officer. With all your doubts cleared there and then, choosing which bus to travel on may be easier.

Even better if the offices are located at Golden Mile Complex, where you can easily hop from one office to another to get the best deal.

*Some of these bus operators are being represented by agents in Singapore. Do check with the local office on which bus operator they are representing.

**Fuel Surcharge is applicable to express bus operators who are members of the Express Bus Agencies Association or EBAA.

By this juncture, you may have already listed down some operators which is to your liking.

But be informed, buses depart from practically everywhere in Singapore! From Tampines to Sembawang to Ang Mo Kio and Jurong East, departure points are scattered islandwide, and not just restricted to Golden Mile Complex at Beach Road.

I recommend that you make a list of departure points from where your bus will leave. For example, if you are travelling to Genting Highlands, you will notice that the departure points are exceptionally more than other destinations.

Five Stars Tours have services that departs from Tampines and Boon Lay, WTS Travel may depart from Bedok or Toa Payoh, whereas Konsortium’s K-Class may also depart from Sembawang SunPlaza Mall. From this list, it might be easier for you to choose your preferred bus.

*Look out for a list of departure points in Singapore.
When making your purchase, be sure to choose either a one-way ticket or a two-way ticket. Buying a two-way ticket may save the hassle of making unnecessary arrangements for your return trip, but on the other hand, doing a ‘mix-and-match’ may save you a few bucks.

This can be done by buying a one-way ticket from both Singapore and Malaysia, either with the same or a different bus operator. You may save up to S$10 or more with this method, simply because ticket prices for buses from Malaysia tend to be a lot cheaper.

However, be warned that not all bus operators have offices in Malaysia where you can purchase the tickets over the counter. You may not even get a ticket on some trips, especially during peak season. So it’s better for you to do a bit more research on the ‘mix-and-match’ method.

Finally, do remember to check your tickets/invoice/booking itinerary carefully before leaving the counter, or if you’re making an online purchase, do it before you make the payment. Immediately contact the local ticketing office for any amendments or corrections.

Check with the respective bus operators how early that you have to check-in or if the bus will have any grace period for late-comers. Do verify with the ticketing officer of the other arrangements that has to be made prior to departure.

And of course, always remember to keep your tickets safely!

Just in case some of you not aware, but this is the place where I spend most of my rest day mornings.

It is a place where it is close to almost all Singaporeans, particular the heartlanders.

It is a place more than just a venue to fill up our tummies, but also a place one might learnt to appreciate the family's warmth and the true meaning of friendship (maybe).

Yet, the irony of this place is that it's a place where you see the rise and fall of an establishment, a place where conflicts bound to take place.

Some Election Advertisments from Taiwan

Sorry for the lack of update lately, due to my various commitments.

And of course, this shall never be an excuse ... so while I'm trying to explore more ideas and thoughts to enrich the content of this blog, which is incorporated inside my travelog - Kotravelog.com, here I would like to share some of old election advertisements I sourced from Youtube.

This clip above is from a perspective of a 27 year-old girl who in her own words detailed the things that happened since she cast her very first ballot that saw the change in power in the Taiwanese politics prior to the last Presidential election that saw the KMT back in power after eight years in hiatus.

This is a high quality advertisement commissioned by the then-opposition KMT for their Presidential Election campaign in 2008, in which all those KMT elected county governors and mayors appeared in this clip to push for the finally rally that eventually saw Ma Ying-jeou elected as the Republic of China's President.

While the DPP, tainted by the scandals involving the family of the then President Chen Shui-bian, reminded the Taiwanese voters to cherish the freedom and democracy they had championed for since the days of the Chiangs father and son (Kai Shek and Ching-kuo) to Chen's assuming of power in 2000.

Finally, I made it... (Tanjong Pagar KTM Station)

This is probably one of, if not the only railway station in the world that generated so much controversies because of its location and ownership.

Located right inside the commercial district of Tanjong Pagar, this railway was built in 1932 during the colonial times and it's own by the KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu or Malayan Railways Limited in English), which is of course the railway operator of Malaysia.

Since the unexpected independence in 1965, the status of the railway has always been the bone of contention for the governments on both sides of the Causeway.

Owning to the fact that the railway line and its surrounding areas that started from this point to Johor Bahru, the nearest Malaysian city to Singapore, cut through the prime district of Bukit Timah belong to Malaysia that for many decades the Singapore government has not been able to go ahead with some of its plans to develop this part of the island.

It was only recently concluded that by next July, this operation of this railway station will be relocated to the Woodlands, the northern tip of the island, thus clearing any obstacle for the local authority to develop the stretch (finally!!).

Which its pending closure, it is not surprising to see shutterbugs armed with their gadgets to snap the grandeur of this transport hub before calling it a day.

One of the things that really caught your eyes would be these mural paintings that deco the walls of the hall that depicted the early days of Malaya.

A reminder from the colonial past is the wordings that abbreviated "FMSR" - Federated Malay States Railway (I presumed).

On both sides of the hall, I spotted these two coats of arms of the two different entities during the colonial days - On the left is belonged to The Straits Settlements and on the right represented the "Federated Malay States" (FMS).

The shield of the Straits Settlements comprises symbols that represented the territories of that of Singapore, Melaka (Malacca), Pulau Pinang (Penang) and Lubuan, whereas the colours on the shield of the FMS were formed by the colours that represented the states of Selangor, Pahang, Perak and Negri Sembilan.

Much to my surprise that the alighting platform of the railway is not a restricted zone as compared to the departing platform.

That the eatery right next to the alighting platform has always been a hit with those newly-arrived and the locals (was told this place sells one of the best "nasi ayam penyet").

Unfortunately, with the relocation of the operation of the railway station is being confirmed, I wonder if the famed "nasi ayam penyet" will be relocated together with this immigration facilities to Woodlands?

Finally, I made it... (Kranji War Memorial)

One thing I came to realize is never trust a singular source, but opt for a plural option when looking for information on bus guide. I had learnt my lesson last Saturday when I visited the Kranji War Memorial.

Before I headed out from Sembawang, where I temporary staying put, I found from one particular source online that SBS 160 from Kranji MRT station was the only bus to the destination.

After a lengthy wait, I decided to peek at the bus guide and realized I had missed a few buses that would had brought me to the Memorial.

Eventually, I took bus 170 (being the first number that popped out after my blooper) and was told by the guide to alight "before Jalan Bumbong".

Bah!! another piece of the misleading detail as there is bus stop (pictured above) at the junction that lead to the Memorial!

I came to know about this memorial during my school days, as I was told that this is the burial place for those who died while fighting against the Japanese during the World War II.

The memorial is well segregated with tombstones of the deceased from British, Australian, Indian armies and local volunteering corps.

These are main landmarks of the memorial which are visible from as far as the MRT viaduct between Kranji and Yew Tee stations.

While the walls of the main building behind these landmarks were craved with names of those who sacrificed during the war.

The stone is place in front of the main building of the memorial with the words "THEY DIED FOR ALL FREE MEN" craved on it in various languages.

Behind the main building is another stone wall which craved the names of those Indian soldiers who died during the services.

Those Indian soldiers who served and died in service were buried at the plot behind the main building.

For some, if they were able to identify who they were, their tombstones were written as in this manner (A SOLDIER OF THE INDIAN ARMY).

While those who were lucky, their name and rank and other details were marked on their tombstones (like this sepoy from the 14th Punjab Regiment, Khan Muhamad died at the age of 21 at 8th September 1942).

These deceased gave their life while trying to prevent (but unsuccessfully) the Japanese from crossing over from Straits of Johor (partial hidden but pictured above with the skyline of Johor Bahru) during a miscalculated move that led to the fall of Singapore in 1942.

While this memorial is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, this place is also served as a State Cemetery as the burial ground for the presidents of the Republic (which I believe is administrated separately from the main cemetery).

However, only two of those deceased presidents of the Republic were buried in the State Cemetery, one of whom was President Benjamin Sheares - the second President of the Republic (pictured above).

While the founding President, Encik Yusof Bin Ishak had his tombstone located on a remote corner of the burial grounds (pictured above).

We are lagging behind???

No meant to belittle whosoever, as we in Singapore, at times, tend to have this kind of "elitism" inside us that we tend to think we "are better than those"around us because of the so-called achievements we accumulated for the past few decades since that "forced independence" in 1965.

Nonetheless, it's always good to look around and see for ourselves are we really that "fantastic"?

No quite so, if we are talking about having our transport operators embracing the social media tools to communicate with their customers.

Last year, I was at Penang for a short getaway and I depended heavily on their local bus service provided by "Rapid Penang", despite its short-comings in some areas, I would say the services provided by them are on-par with ours, if not better in terms in utilize the wonders of both "Facebook"and "Twitter".

As we can see for ourselves, the crew behind the scene constantly update bit of information pertaining its routes, the place of interest in Penang and which bus number to take to bring you there.

Because of its instant two-way interaction, I feedback my rather unpleasant experience while trying to take a bus back to KOMTAR area from Gurney Street. Below are excerpts of our "conversations".

PoHui Ko I faced some difficulties while I took 103 to Gurney Plaza when I was there last Oct.

As there was no clear bus stop for boarding and alight and I recalled I had to cut across some dark alleys before I found a bus stop and board the bus that brought me back to KOMTAR

Rapid Penang Hi Po Hui,you mean there are no bus stop infront of Gurney Plaza?

Actually there is a bus stop right in front of Gurney Plaza. which is facing the gurney drive. May be you have used another exit which is facing to the Kelawai Road, but there are also bus stop nearby. Hope you wont have this kind of bad experience during your another trip in Penang.

You can always ask the people around you, am sure they will be kind enough to show you the way.

PoHui Ko Thanks for the feedback, my recollection was that I alighted at the roadside car park facing the sea and the bus driver told me wait there for my return trip to KOMTAR.

But having wait for a lengthy period, I decided to go to the back of the Gurney plaza and told by the "jaga" the bus would stop near the taxi stand and after the lengthy wait I gave up before cut thru' the dark alley to find a visible bus stop.

Do take note of the date and times in italic to see how promptly the communication took place.

Having said that, just take a look at ours at our own backyard that only when a letter to the papers then a well-crafted reply from whichever particular operators will appear on the papers days later.

How Lame, isn't it? Especially, we are living in such a fast-pace society yet we still have people-behind-the-scene having to "think-thrice" before penning their replies to the feedback.

A check at our very own operators' presence on the social media front had helped to shed a few lights on how backward we are.

Pictured above is the only type facebook page I'm able to source on SBS Transit.

Looked kind of mundane with the plain, "straight-from-the-textbook" kind of introduction to the company background, etc,. While I just could not locate their presence of "Twitter".

I would not say SMRT fare much better, but we can see from here this "facebook" page is more of an "ad-hoc" purpose (for some on-going programs) and something that is not permanent I guess.

But back to Rapid Penang, whom I felt our two operators can learn a thing or two about instant, constant engaging with passengers by taking a look what they tweeted below.

Finally, I made it... (Sugei Buloh Wetland Reserve)

I always wanna go to Sugei Buloh Wetland Reserve, but never find an appropriate time to do so, until this morning.

After I boarded the bus outside Kranji MRT station following a 10 minutes wait, the next thing I knew was I had to walk my way into the Reserve (as I was informed that only on selected days, the only bus to the Reserve will stop in front of the entrance).

Under the light drizzle in 15 minutes, I found myself standing outside the entrance of the Reserve with this sign (pictured above) along Neo Tiew Cresent.

There was a small printout I overlooked that I thought it was free entry on weekdays, only to realized that is meant for non-school holidays!

So after paying a dollar admission charge, I begun my trail along this north-western end of the island with my newly-purchase camera for a trial out session.
